Photography Research

Cindy Sherman

Cindy Sherman was born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey.  After graduating from high school,  Cindy entered the State University College at Buffalo.  She originally wanted to pursue painting, but switched to photography because she felt she had done all she could with painting and wanted to try something else.  In most of her works of art, she is the model.  However, in her "untitled" series, she portrays other characters/individuals and chose to leave the photographs untitled to depersonalize the images.  In addition to using herself in photographs, Cindy also uses dolls and prosthetic body parts in many images.

Hippolyte Bayard's Self Portrait as a Drowned Man

This photograph, which was taken in 1840, was the first staged photograph.  Hippolyte, upset because he wasn't getting photographic recognition, faked his own death and submitted a suicide letter on the back of the image.  After sending out this picture, Bayard was given 3,000 francs.
